Cobie Smit was one of the new generation of classical guitarist to emerge from The Netherlands during the 1980s, having first studied at the Rotterdam Conservatorium and then completing her training in the Royal Conservatorium of The Hague. Following her early professional recital work in Holland, she then extended her career with performances in the UK and Scandinavia.
Having met and subsequently married John Mills, this led to a move to New Zealand where as a duo they gave a large number of concerts and broadcasts over a three-year period, including a special 2-hour performance for HM Queen Elizabeth and The Duke of Edinburgh in Nelson on the South Island.
Further concerts followed including Singapore, Australia and Canada. Settling back in the UK in 1988, Cobie Smit now teaches at Downside Abbey School and Millfield School, (both in Somerset,) in addition to which she has duos with flute and counter-tenor. She plays a guitar by the Sussex luthier Rohan Lowe.
